Not Just Another New Year
Posted On Sunday April 15, 2007 By Roger
I practically live in Times Square so I usually dread New Years Eve like no other day. I mean, who wants to have several million drunk people invade their front lawn? The police barricades and general hassle of getting in and out of my own home just makes for a bad experience. On this New Years Eve however, I had reason to celebrate the Earth making it once more around the Sun, The Flaming Lips and Wilco played Madison Square Garden. It was an amazing show with two amazing bands. It was a Flaming Lips show on the grandest scale. And Wilco tore the house down. It was a night I will never forget and the best New Years Eve so far. Above is a pic taken from my cell phone at the stroke of midnight.

This is the day I moved to New York. I was about to start grad school. I was filled with excitment over my new surroundings and friends. I had grown up in Arkansas and spent the previous 4 years in Boston. My entire life was new to me. I often wonder where I’d be now if I hadn’t had to courage to move here. Manhattan is an intimidating place for an Arkansawyer to find himself. I remember every time I’d take the bus into the city, when I was still looking for an apartment here, my entire body would just fill with nervous energy at first sight of the skyline. And the city was made endlessly more intimidating just 10 days later when that skyline changed forever. I had no idea just how much this city and the entire world were about to shift. But this place has been my home like no other ever since.
